Schwieger allowed the crew to abandon ship before sinking the vessel. So the new threat of poison gas dropped from enemy bombers excited a grossly exaggerated view of the civilian deaths that would occur on the outbreak of any future war. McMahon accepted the boundaries of Hussein "subject to modification",  and suggested the modification that "portions of Syria lying to the west of the districts of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo cannot be said to be purely Arab and should be excluded.
